So you've bought a few smart home bits. A smart speaker, some plugs, maybe a colour-changing bulb. They work fine on their own. But you've noticed something annoying.

The plugs use one app. The bulbs use another. Your smart speaker only works with some brands. None of it talks to each other.

This is basically everyone's experience with smart home tech. It's why most people give up after a few gadgets. And it's exactly the problem Home Assistant solves.

What it is

Home Assistant is free software that runs on a small computer in your house. Think of it like a universal remote – but instead of controlling your TV and soundbar, it connects everything in your home. Lights, heating, sensors, speakers, even your robot vacuum.

The clever bit is it doesn't care what brand you bought. Philips Hue, IKEA, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Sonos, Ring – it talks to pretty much everything.

What that looks like

Instead of opening three apps to turn off the lights and lock the door before bed, you press one button or say "goodnight" and it all happens at once.

Instead of your heating coming on at a fixed time, it checks if anyone's actually home using your phone's location.

Instead of a smart display telling you the weather, your bedroom light gradually fades to amber when it's time to wind down.

The best part

It works offline. Most smart gadgets rely on the internet. If your broadband drops, your expensive smart lights become useless. Home Assistant runs entirely on your own network. Internet cuts out and your lights, heating, and automations keep working.

Is it hard to set up

Honestly, setting it up from scratch can be fiddly. That's where we come in. But once it's running, you don't need to touch it. You get an app on your phone (or use Apple Home or Google Home if you prefer), and everything just works.

You don't need to know what ZigBee is or how any of the technical stuff works. You just need to know that when you walk into the kitchen, the light comes on. Because that's how a smart home should feel.
