When people ask about smart home security, they usually mean cameras. Can I see who's at the door? Can I check the driveway from my phone?

Smart smoke and heat alarms

Standard smoke alarms are fine if you're home. If you're not, they just make noise to an empty house.

A connected smoke alarm sends a push notification the moment it triggers. You can link it to other automations too — lights flash red, speakers announce the alert, extractor fans shut off so they don't feed the fire. If you've got smart TRVs on your radiators, the system can close every valve to slow smoke spread through the house.

Window and door sensors

The heating drops to a frost-protection baseline. All the leak and smoke sensors are actively monitored. Window and door sensors report open/closed status.

You get a dashboard on your phone showing everything is fine. If something isn't, you know immediately. Not when you get back to a flooded kitchen.

The bottom line

Cameras are for peace of mind. Sensors are for actual protection. For less than the cost of a decent camera setup, you can have leak detection, smoke monitoring, and door sensors covering your whole house.
