We've all been there. You're in the living room, settled in, not moving much. Maybe reading, maybe scrolling your phone. And then the lights go out. Because the motion sensor decided nobody's here anymore.
You wave your arms around like an idiot to trigger it. Lights come back on. Ten minutes later, same thing.
This isn't a smart home. It's an annoying home. And the fix is simpler than you think.
Motion sensors see movement. Presence sensors see people.
Motion sensors — the standard PIR ones you get in most smart home kits — detect heat moving across their field of view. Walk past one, it sees you. Sit still, it doesn't.
Presence sensors use mmWave radar (same tech that's in your car's parking sensors, just more precise). They can detect a person breathing in a chair. Micro-movements. Chest rising and falling. You don't need to wave. You just need to exist.
Where this actually matters
Home office. You sit at your desk for hours. Motion sensor? Lights go off every 20 minutes. Presence sensor? Lights stay on until you leave the room.
Living room. Watching a film. Barely moving. Motion sensor thinks the room is empty and kills the lights. Presence sensor knows you're on the sofa.
Bathroom. This is the classic one. Shower curtain blocks the motion sensor. You're in there for ten minutes and suddenly it's pitch black. Never happens with presence detection.
Kitchen. Standing at the hob, mostly still. Stirring something. Motion sensor times out. Presence sensor doesn't.
Do you need them everywhere
No. Hallways and landings — motion sensors are fine. You're passing through. But any room where you sit still, presence sensors stop the frustration.
They cost a bit more than PIR sensors, but they're cheaper now than they were two years ago. And honestly, not having to do the arm-wave dance every evening is worth the upgrade.
The setup
They connect via ZigBee just like everything else. Home Assistant picks them up automatically. You set up an automation that says "if someone is in this room, lights on. If nobody is here for five minutes, lights off."
That's it. You don't think about it again. The lights just work like they should have from the start.
Installing presence-aware homes across Greater Manchester and the North West. Your lights should know you're there.
